“Rutland in the Civil War(Part 1)” was compiled and written by Robert Ranftle, commemorating Rutland’s participation in the War.
The issue opens with the biographies of four Rutland men, with accompanying pictures, who won the Medal of Honor. Four local men among 62 who were residents of Vermont.
Next the forming of Union Veterans into the GAR is discussed, listing the two posts that were established in Rutland; One in West Rutland and the second in a permanent Memorial Hall built in 1883. By 1931 with a decreasing membership the building was torn down.
Brief biographies of other leading personalities follow, with a concluding review of “A Genteel Spy”. A truly interesting look at Rutland’s participation in the War.
